Hi Folks. I am getting one of these together with LX750 mount. The mount does not have the best of reputations so as a fall back position I am thinink about alternatives.
A key point ids the weight of the 178 ED as OTA.
Does any one have that information please.
Best wishes
Dunstan

How novel!  I can reply to myself. I note the underwhelming response to date, but for those who venture here in search of the answer it is indeed the same as Life the Universe and Everything

I have a 127ED, if you surf the web you should find lots of forums that discuss refractors.  It is a shame that Meade was forced to drop these older instruments as they do perform and to give better views.  But everybody seems to think the want to do astrophotograpy, even though most don't and most that try give up because of the effort required, as setting in a chair using a guide scope for an hour or so is not what I call entertainment, hence the public push for more light gathering capabilities of the larger Schmidts.
