My son was given a Meade telescope. It needs a few parts. I can't find any model number anywhere. Can someone help so I can order parts?

Type: Refractor
Color: White
Mount: Equatorial
Lens Diameter: 70mm
Tripod:Aluminum. Two sides pieces with center extension.

Thanks in advance.

Do you know the focal length (in millimeters) or the focal ratio (like f/10)?

Also, what size eyepieces does it take? This is the diameter of the tube that goes into the telescope or diagonal (mirrored piece)? It will either be just a bit smaller than 1 inch (0.965) or 1.25 inches.

With the type of Tripod you have, the scope has been around for a while. But, I do not have a model number for you off the top of my head.

The information in the questions will help track it down.

Also, what is broken on the scope?

Thanks for the reply.

The model 285 drawing looks right but my lens is 70mm. 285 is 60mm.

Eyepiece 1: Meade MA 25mm.
" 2: " MH 9mm

Both eyepieces are threaded and about 27mm thread outside diameter.

The diagonal mirror has bad threads so I need a replacement.
The finder scope has an aluminum end for a threaded something. I'm not if that is to attach a focusing tube, a diagonal mirror, or an eyepiece.

I would like to repair the scope so that my son will learn about all the parts of the scope. I would also like for him to know that rebuilding things is sometimes better than just buying new.

Thanks again

Larry

I forgot to mention that I also need the RA and DEC cable controls. Are most EQ mounts for this size refractor pretty much the same?

For the items you are looking for, you should not have too much trouble.

For the finder, you will simply need to get a new one, which should not be a problem. You should be able to get one for $10 or less.

The diagonal will run you anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the quality.

There are any number of sites on eBay that have various parts available for small telescopes.

One that comes to mind is Telescope-Warehouse. Bill Vorce, who owns the business is there primarily to help people like you get into astronomy.

He also has a website at www.telescope-warehouse.com. You can contact him at scopehed@frontiernet.net, I think.

I will repeat. There are many others out there that have telescope parts and I do not want to point you completely in the direction of Bill Vorce.

I just know for sure he can meet your needs.

I am not sure exactly what the model number is for your scope. I looked through the instruction manuals for older Meade scopes and could not find one for a 70mm equatorial.

I do not think it will mater too much. The parts you are needing are pretty generic.

Let me know if there is anything else that I am overlooking.

That is good to hear. So far, he has come through every time I have recommended him.
