What is that round silver thing on the undeside of the OTA? Do the fork arms attach/detach by means of some sort of easy quick attach/disconnect feature? From the photo it looks like you may need to attach with bolts possible hex head?

I suppose it is a balance-weight since the LX600 is partly made for astrophotography, so the scope will be in balance regardless of what photo-equipment you use.

The screws used to attach the OTA to the forks are hex, I suppose. I don't think it could be made much easier. Screws are safe and durable. And with a wegde (especially upnorth), the bigger scopes will put a lot of strain on the attachment points.

With a detachable OTA, I think the 12" will be almost as easy to lift as a complete 8" scope (which I have now:)

Is this really Meade telling us the scope is easier to set up. Easier than what? If you can't touch it, you can't set it up.

This is a great idea. As the years roll by the harder it is to hoist the OTA and base. Looking forward to see them at NEAF this year.

I have been waiting for one since 5 May 2012... I got an E-Mail from them about 3 1/2 weeks ago that It should be shipping in 5-8 weeks. I had a RX400 16" that had the removeable fork arms. It made putting it together alot better because of the weight.
