I've found that visually, the Moon is almost as easy in daylight as it is at night but photographing it seems somewhat more of a challenge.

My latest effort I think is a step in the right direction and shows a dark spot near Grimaldi that is real. I've checked one or two other photos (by others) and it appears on them, too. I stacked 5 shots and did loads of processing to get this:
