PST's condition?

I have a PST Coronado since 2005. I didn't use it since March 2006. How can I'm sure it is safe to see the Sun? I mean I have no idea how can I tell if the filter has been damaged by fungi, bacteria.. or humidity that could damage the solar filter. Is there any way to be sure about this?  When I have a look to the front of lens it seems to have some red punctutions, but I don't recall if it was there always. Any advice, suggestions how to manage this question would be welcome.

Thank you

People may be reluctant to give advice about the safety of the scope without seeing it first hand, and without having the specialized technical background to make such an assessment. If you are unsure about the safety of the scope the best option would be to send it to Coronado and have one of their technicians do some bench tests on it and prepare a report.

The rusty look is not a safety issue.  It reduces overall transmission which degrades the image but otherwise is not a problem.

I wish they'd sell replacement onjectives. Mine's not too bad but I'd like a new one.
