How to share Com Port ? ?
Posted 16 January 2008 - 06:57 AM
In a previous post you explained how to set up AS to share the scope's Com port between the telescope control function and the Envisage imaging function.
I just can't seem to get the network scheme set up right.
My scope is on COM4 and will work in both modules individually.
Could you explain once again just how to set up the networking?

open my computer and select C:\Program Files\Meade\AutostarSuite\netscope.exe
when the dialog pops up select com port as 4
network port 5401
then check the listen box.
then open up the Autostar controller
at the bottom under network address/port add 127.0.0.1
next box 5401 then check the connect.
In Envisage select telescope and in the box add 127.0.0.1 then connect.
This will allow you to use the com port with Envisage and AS controller.
The connectns are made through netscope and allows you to use 2 programs with the same com port.
If you have any problems let me know.

I found part of my problem. I was opening Netscope, making the necessary entries, then closing the window. In effect, I was closing Netscope and thus making any further actions worthless.
Unfortunately, allowing Netscope to run in the background and then continuing with the process was only partially successful. I can get AS to "talk" to the scope in network mode, but when I try to connect in Envisage, the whole program crashes.
I'll keep trying.

You also may want to join the Yahoo group on DSI Imaging.
Myself as many of the members are very knowledgable with Envisage as well as all of the workings of the program.
Ask Steve Hamilton if he was the one who had the connection writeup.
You can and will learn a ton there and get faster replies as many members help out.
Some days im the only one here to answer things and i dont get to everything.

I had to bookmark this post.
Thanks! You answered several questions I had posted yesterday in getting AS and Envisage to work together.
This pointed me in the right direction and it worked.
One thing you forgot to mention is the protocol to use in AS is via Network.
Also, I made short cuts on the desk top for Netscope and ASCtrl to make getting to the quicker.

Just out of curiosity, I modified the sequence, setting up the net, but then trying to connect first in Envisage...it worked, but took almost 2 minutes! And when I then went back to AS, I was able to connect.
Now the bad news. When I went back to Envisage, the telescope controls were a bit erratic and there was a noticable delay between clicking the buttons and having the scope respond. Additionally, I tried to disconnect the scope in Envisage and reconnect. Result...program crashed.
I really don't need to have both connections, it's just disconcerting that the system won't work. Since it's a new lap top, I'll try exploring it to see if there is some strange setting somewhere. In the meantime, I'll just connect to the scope from Envisage and forget AS.
Thanks for listening.
